The art and culture company, which had been in existence for four decades and was considered a daring venture at the time, was founded in 1985 as a timber industry company on the periphery of western Hungary. Soon, however, the company, then known only as the “Nagycenk Gallery”, changed its corporate profile and focused on picture framing and the trade in works of art.
László Horváth loved artwoks with real passion and considered contemporary Hungarian art to be his centerpiece. He himself painted, drew, worked as a graphic artist and organized exhibitions during his student days. It is therefore not surprising that he drew ever closer to the arts out of a special inner motivation. There is no doubt that the increasingly concrete intellectual background of the gallery was later provided by the outstanding personalities of contemporary art in Szentendre, the Lajos Vajda Studio. The milestones of development remained clear and consistent. Today, the collection of the internationally renowned gallery presents to its visitors the works of dozens of Munkácsy Prize winners and numerous Kossuth Prize winners, countless artists with high-ranking state and professional awards. The aim is to have good, high-quality works on the walls of the gallery or wherever they find a home, and at the same time to offer their owners pleasure, perhaps even everyday inspiration.
The Horváth family was committed to art and had no considerations about their investment decision. Rich local and regional conditions, possibilities and impulses (tourism, culinary) were subordinated by the decision-makers. The geological position of the headquarter on the periphery (Hungary-Austria) has supported the uniqueness and contributed to international success and reputation. Count István Széchenyi, the "greatest Hungarian", was at his time a key figure and had a great economical, technical and cultural influence. His values had contributed to the country's developments, which values also deserve special attention today.
László Horváth's passion for arts accompanied him from the very beginning as a young entrepreneur and patron in Western Hungary. The Gallery Horváth and Lukács provide therefore an in-depth knowledge and understanding of selected Hungarian contemporary art.
