40 Years in the Service of Art – The Anniversary of the Gallery Horvath & Lukacs Nagycenk

Four decades of art and picture frames by Horvath & Lukacs

Forty years. A span of time in which a small, bold enterprise has grown into a significant cultural venue, devoted to promoting contemporary Hungarian art. The story began in 1985 – originally as a woodworking business, located on the geographical periphery, but driven by a deep inner passion. The founder was not only an entrepreneur, but also an artist: he drew, painted, worked as a graphic designer – and even held exhibitions during his university years. His love for art was sincere and profound, and his dedication to contemporary Hungarian art came from the heart.

Before long, the company’s focus shifted: industrial activity took a back seat, giving way to picture framing and the trade of fine art. This is how the “Nagycenk Gallery”, as it is known today, was born – a place that, over the decades, has evolved into a cultural and intellectual hub with a clear and consistent identity. Its most defining influences came from contemporary painting in Szentendre, particularly from members of the Vajda Lajos Studio.

Today, the gallery’s collection includes works by numerous artists who have received the Munkácsy Prize, the Kossuth Prize, and the titles “Meritorious Artist” or “Artist of the Nation”. The goal has always been simple yet ambitious: to present high-quality works – pieces that not only decorate walls but also bring joy, inspiration, and emotional depth to their owners’ everyday lives.

Because we believe: art plays a vital role in society. It is not a luxury, but a necessity. A source of reflection, a place for connection, a tool for human growth. Our mission is to exhibit works that carry this power – whether in the gallery or in the homes where they ultimately find belonging.

We are looking for people who are willing to invest time, attention, and resources in art – not only in the works themselves, but in a vision. Our focus is on Hungarian art, but we believe these works and voices deserve to be heard far beyond our borders. We want to carry their message into the wider world – and bring greater visibility to what we stand for.
