🕊️ János Aknay (1949–2026)
With profound sadness, we mark the passing of János Aknay, Kossuth and Munkácsy Prize–winning painter and sculptor, Artist of the Nation, and honorary citizen of Szentendre. One of the defining voices of contemporary Hungarian art, he passed away at the age of 76 in the quiet hours of the morning.
János Aknay was not only an outstanding artist represented in our collection, but also a close friend of László Horváth, the founder and visionary behind our gallery. His works form a defining and spiritually guiding core of the Horváth & Lukács Collection. This deep connection and the values he embodied are symbolically expressed by the presence of an Aknay angel on the façade of the gallery, as well as by another Aknay angel watching over the Ilona Major equestrian stables.
These works carry forward the enduring spiritual legacy of the artist.
We wish to express our sincere condolences to his loved ones.
